*Accumulating evidence suggests an important role of nutrition, specifically of a group of nutrients called carotenoids, in maintaining eye health. One of the most promising of these nutrients is lutein. The body cannot make lutein and it is found in a limited number of fruits and vegetables. The highest concentration of lutein in the body is found in the eye, especially in the macula. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in people aged 65 years and older.4 Lutein acts as a filter to protect the delicate cells of the eye from damage caused by harmful sunlight. Lutein has no known effect on diabetes retinopathy.
